Robert Chan: 11th University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) Student Reflection

Attending the University Scholars Leadership Symposium(USLS) was a pivotal moment in my personal and professional growth as a future leader in the humanitarian field. The symposium provided me with a platform to connect with like-minded peers and professionals, gain insights from impactful sessions and speakers, engage in community service activities, overcome challenges, and broaden my perspective on global issues. In this reflection, I would like to share my memorable experiences and how they have shaped my understanding of the importance of cultural exchange, and the role of youth in driving positive change.

One of the most valuable aspects of the USLS was the opportunity to interact and network with passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds who shared my vision for creating a better world, for example, my roommate comes from Korea. We always talk about the purpose of this symposium and the changes we can make. Engaging in thought-provoking conversations and hearing inspiring stories from professionals in the humanitarian sector fueled my motivation and ignited my passion to make a difference. Connecting with these like-minded peers inspired me to expand my horizons and think beyond boundaries.

Another part of it, I was exposed to powerful sessions and presenters at the symposium who are leaders in their fields and determined to improve the world. A panel debate on sustainable development and the role of youth was one session that had a big impact. The presenters discussed their own experiences while hammering home the significance of integrating sustainable practices into community development. Delegates are excited to hear other points of view and share their own throughout the symposium. This session profoundly impacted my understanding of community development, which highlighted the necessity for long-term, sustainable efforts to solve urgent social and environmental concerns.

Participating in a community service activity during the symposium was a transformative experience. I had the opportunity to work alongside local community members in river-cleaning activities. This firsthand experience reinforced the importance of empowering communities and involving them in decision-making processes. It also highlighted the crucial role of everyone in environmental protection. The most important part is that everyone in this programme is willing to participate in the river cleaning even though we have to bear the smelly water and dirty garbage. Witnessing the positive changes brought about by our efforts encouraged me to actively engage in community development projects in the future.

However, the USLS presented its fair share of challenges, such as language barriers and cultural differences. The delegates come from all over the world, they have different accents and cultures. However, a coin has two sides, these obstacles served as valuable learning opportunities. They taught me the importance of adaptability, patience, and effective communication in multicultural settings. Overcoming these challenges enhanced my ability to work in diverse teams and reinforced the significance of cultural exchange and intercultural dialogue in driving positive change.

All in all, attending the USLS was a transformative journey that gave me a lesson in humanitarian leadership, sustainable development, and the power of youth in creating positive change. The symposium provided me with a platform to connect with like-minded individuals, engage in community service, overcome challenges, and broaden my perspective. I am now more committed than ever to addressing the Sustainable Development Goals, fostering intercultural dialogue, and making a lasting impact in the humanitarian field. With the support from HSUHK, I am honoured to be the delegate of my university and Hong Kong. This experience has equipped me with the necessary tools, inspiration, and network to embark on this transformative journey towards a better future.
